Why Good People Make Bad Choices

by Charles L. Allen

Loving Healing Press (2007)

ISBN 9781932690255

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (8/06)

Within the framework of this 19 Chapter book, the author, Charles Lawrence Allen puts into perspective for the reader, the ego, it’s agenda within our lives and how we, the reader, can find peace of mind and happiness through integrity. We learn from the beginning how good choices and bad choices can affect our lives to thepoint of destroying integrity. We learn how to recognize, foster and finally keep integrity foremost within our lives. And we learn that when integrity is foremost, our lives are happier and calmer, as well.

Integrity is often spoken of in everyday life, but if truth be known, few know exactly how to define integrity. Integrity is predictable, trustworthy and dependable. Simply put, in the book, “…you can count on integrity”. My oldest son takes Taekwondo, and in his training he has been given some wonderful advice by his instructors. Taekwondo is a sport that is built upon trustworthiness and integrity and the instructors teach the students not just the forms of the sport, but also how to apply the tenants to their lives through simple, easy to understand examples. One statement about integrity has often been used in this way, “Anyone can do the right thing when others are watching, but it takes a person with integrity to do the right thing when there is no one there.” This is a simple sentence but one that seems to fit the author’s description of integrity well. It is oftentimes hard to “do the right thing” when no one is there to judge you but yourself, but the person of integrity does that right thing and he does it without thinking. The hardest thing about integrity is to have it when no one knows it is being challenged.

I was intrigued with “Why Good People Make Bad Choices” and it’s take on integrity. The book is a worthwhile read, and one that is filled with important information and advice. However, I feel it could be improved and made more accessible by streamlining some of the excess wordage. That said, I would still recommend this book to anyone who might be looking for a way to find happiness and peace of mind in their lives. It is well organized, expertly researched and filled with lists and examples that will appeal to an array of readers.

This book would be an excellent addition to the library of any counselor, student of sociology/psychology and those who practice martial arts as well. For while the information is definitely written in a “self help” way, this book could easily further cement a strong belief system already in place. As we all are on a constant journey toward bettering ourselves, “Why Good People Make Bad Choices” is a wonderful tool to help us stay on the straight path toward happiness and peace of mind!

The Significance of Good Coaching in Mixed Martial Arts

August 18th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The concept of Mixed Martial Arts incorporates within itself the various fighting techniques used in the traditional forms of martial arts as well as those used in the relatively new styles such as wrestling and boxing. The popularity of MMA has increased so much in the United States as well as the South Eastern region of Asia that it is almost on par with the major sports such as baseball and basketball. Since this form of fighting is new, the rules of the fight are being paid attention to only in the recent times. This situation is particularly tricky for the coaches because when they trained themselves, there were no rules and they have to pay attention to all the rules while teaching their students. Following are a few handy suggestions on becoming a good MMA coach.

Obviously, for being able to teach your students well, you have to be properly trained at this form of martial art. You should try and gather all the important information related to MMA and acquaint you with all the technicalities involved. These tips will help you in understanding not only the nature of the style but also the mind of the student better which will be very helpful in gauging his mental situation.

Next thing is that good coaches must workout on a regular basis and maintain a good level of physical health. Most of the coaches tend to neglect working out after taking up to coaching. However, exercise is important because the students look up to their coach. Also, it is important to realize the limitations of the human body and not subject your students to extreme levels of exercise. Ideally, the training workouts allotted to the students should be done alternatively. This means that the students should either given a day of rest or made to do lighter exercises after a day of a heavy workout.

Mixed Martial Arts cannot be mastered by physical strength alone. The fighter has to be mentally fit as well. Hence, an ideal coach studies the tactics of his adversary and picks up the moves that he thinks will be beneficial for his students. A lot of tricks can be learnt by watching the recorded clips of professional MMA fights. These clips will give you a rough idea of the attack methods that will be used by the opponents and you will have enough time to formulate counter attack policies against them. Take note of the strengths as well as the weaknesses of the competitor and find ways of how you can make the most of his weaknesses.

The coach must keep improvising on his MMA skills time and again. Incorporating techniques of taekwondo will prove to be very handy while instructing your students about the correct posture of the body and the better techniques that should be used in a professional fight. In order to be in a position to clear all the doubts that the students might have, the coach should have all the necessary information about the martial art form that he is promoting.

Along with being strict with the students and getting them to be disciplined, it is also important to see to it that your students do not begin to detest you. Try to understand their problems and motivating them to give their best can be a little difficult but it is certainly not impossible.

Taekwondo – What is Taekwondo?

July 3rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Taekwondo is an approach to the martial arts, that instills just more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of increasing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Today, it has grown into a worldwide sport that’s assertained an international appeal, and is among one of the Olympic games.

What is the meaning of Tae Kwon Do?

It is comprised of three distinct parts “Tae-Kwon-Do”, however, it’s made up of only one word in Korean. “Tae” means “foot,” “to step on,” or “leg”; “Kwon” means “fight,” or “fist”; and “Do” means the “way” or “discipline.” If we put these three parts together, we can see a couple of critical ideas behind TaeKwonDo.

First, Taekwondo is the enlightened way of using “Tae” and “Kwon” which are comprised of your “fists” and “feet”, or all of your body parts that represent your fists and feet.

Secondly, Taekwondo is a path to control a fighting situation so the outcome of the situation is peace. This idea comes from the meaning of Tae Kwon “to put fists under control”. Thus Taekwondo means “the right way of using all of your body parts to stop fights and help to create a world with peace.”

Taekwondo has developed along side the history of Korea and has , been represented by several different labels in throughout the course of it’s history. In Korea, Taekwondo started out as a defense martial art called “Taekkyon” or “Subak,” and made as a way of challenging body and mind in the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, under the name of “Sunbae.” In the Shilla period, it had become the backbone of Hwarangdo that focused on producing leaders of the country.

Taekwondo today is similar to arts in other Asian countries and combines concepts and ideas with them, because throughout its history it has incororated many different styles that were in the countries that surrounded them, like Japan and China.

But Taekwondo sets itself apart from many oriental martial arts in a couple respects. First, physically it is very dynamic with active movements that include a mirage of foot skills. Secondly, the physical movements are in line with that of the mind and life as a whole.

Third, it possesses dynamic poomsae (see poomsae in the martial arts) from another perspective. Taekwondo can be characterized by unity: the unity of body, mind, and life, and the unity of the poomsae and confrontation. When you participate in Taekwondo, you should quite your mind and synchronize your mind with your movements, and spread this harmony to your life and society. This is how the principle of the physical movements, the principle of training ones mind, and the principle of oneness of life become whole.

Taekwondo is an attitude about life, just like any other apect of ones life like haveing a job, raising a family, or fighting for something in which you believe in. What sets Taekwondo apart from these is that it is an activity for survival in extremely life changing situations. One must always overcome the enemy that is trying to cause harm to you. But simply winning a fight is not enough to ensure one’s security, because the enemy may recuperate and attempt to assault you again. Also, there can be many other enemies than the one that was just defeated. A person can’t ever truly feel safe unless that person gains a continued sense of peace. To assertain this permanent or lasting sense of peace, one needs wholeness. This is the aim of Taekwondo. Otherwise Taekwondo would be no different from any other street-fighting skills.

Taekwondo’s goal is for mental and spiritual growth and improvements in ones life through its unique activities. This is why one could say Taekwondo is a way of life. To ultimately enable oneself to lead more valuable lives, we would do well by obtaining the guiding principles at the core of Taekwondo.

Removal of Criminal Record Allows for Holiday Travel

June 30th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When temperatures drop and the days get shorter, we know that the holiday season is fast approaching. Amid the rush of shopping, presents, and glad tidings comes the inevitable desire to spend time with loved ones.

Unfortunately, some Canadians aren’t able to see their family and friends during the holidays. Approximately 1 in 5 Canadians have a criminal record that prevents them from leaving the country.

Anyone who has ever been arrested has a criminal record. The stigma associated with getting convicted of a crime can be crippling; not only do people with a criminal record have more trouble finding jobs and apartments, many of them are also separated from friends and family members who live abroad.

However, there is a way for Canadians with a criminal records to enter the United States. The American government grant waivers to people with a criminal record who would like to enter the U.S.

Applying for a waiver can be a very complicated process. Some people may need both a pardon and a waiver, and others may only need one or the other.

Not only is it difficult to ascertain which documents are required for U.S. entry, but the application process is time-consuming, lengthy, and intricate. For a small fee, private companies are able to provide people with a criminal record with the help they need to enter the United States.

Toronto-based firm www.canadianpardons.ca is a leader in the pardons field, processing approximately 5,000 pardons a year.

Everyone deserves to be with those they love during the holidays. Having a criminal record shouldn’t detain you from leading a full and happy life.

Aerobic Exercise in the Martial Arts

June 29th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Aerobic exercise – an important training tool for martial artists.

Generally, physical activity is safe for most people. In some cases it is important to get an from your Doctor before you exercise. If you have health issues or are over 45 years of age and want to take martial arts classes, see your Doctor before signing up.

Taekwondo training offers an excellent aerobic workout. This martial art emphasizes kicking techniques as well as punching techniques. Kicking is 70% and punching is 30% of the typical Taekwondo workout. During my 28 years in the martial arts and my association with Olympic class Taekwondo athletes, aerobic exercise is paramount to a solid training regimen. Virtually every athletic sport requires stamina. Aerobic exercise helps develop strength and endurance. If you are over 45 years of age and you begin martial arts training, build your stamina at a moderate pace and work up to your maximum slowly.

In my martial arts classes our students start out with stretching exercises. This prepares them for the punching and kicking drills of Taekwondo training. Stretching reduces the possibility of injuring muscles, ligaments and tendons. After everyone is stretched and warmed up we move on to kicking, punching and blocking drills. During a typical Taekwondo class you repeatedly move large muscles in your arms (punching drills), legs and hips (kicking drills).

Here are some of the benefits of regular intervals of aerobic exercise:

o The heart enlarges.

o The heart increases its blood stroke volume.

o Resting heart rate slows, less than 60 beats per minute indicates good physical fitness

o Oxygen is used more efficiently resulting in increased fat burning during exercise

o Increased endurance

o Lower blood pressure

o Reduced risks in developing diabetes and other diseases

o Increase in good cholesterol, decrease in bad cholesterol

o Faster recovery after exercise

o More efficient cardiovascular system

o A positive body composition change, more muscle and less fat

As you can see, aerobic exercise improves the body functions and helps you become healthier.

As a senior citizen, I find that in between Taekwondo workouts a two mile walk at a brisk pace is an easy low impact aerobic exercise that is fairly easy to do. You can walk outdoors or on a treadmill if you have one. Either way, find a comfortable pace and increase it gradually.

Whether you are a Taekwondo athlete training for full contact competition or someone who simply enjoys this martial art, the aerobic workout that Taekwondo training provides can be very beneficial to your health.

Why Should I Choose Martial Arts For My Child?

May 30th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Parents may choose to enroll their children in a martial arts program for a number of different reasons. Martial arts can provide a safe and healthy outlet for children. It offers them the opportunity for highly important physical exercise. In addition it teaches them skills and lessons that will prove valuable throughout their entire life.

Obesity in the United States has reached an all time high level. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007-2008 indicates that an estimated 17 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 19 are categorized as obese. This means that they have a BMI, or Body Mass Index, of 30 or higher.

The increasing popularity of video games, computer networking websites, and other electronic advancements has created a society which does not encourage physical fitness the same way that it once did. Playing outside with friends, running around, and engaging in sporting activities have been replaced with Nintendo, iPod, and laptops.

Enrolling a child in Taekwondo, Karate, or Kung Fu can provide them with the opportunity and desire to engage in physical activity which can lead to healthier bodies and minds. Parents may also choose to enroll their children in a martial arts program for the affect it can have on their child’s sense of confidence and well being. Martial arts life skills that are taught, developed, and encouraged include many skills. These include things such as respect, self esteem, integrity, confidence, perseverance, loyalty, self control, courtesy, and confidence.

Kids are encouraged to set personal goals for themselves, both in and out of class, and are given the tools necessary to help them achieve those goals. Another reason to enroll a child in mixed martial arts is the sense of security instilled in the parents and child that comes with knowing that the child has been taught the basics of self defense. The world is an increasingly dangerous and predatory place and even the slightest level of self defense training can help a child escape from a potentially dangerous situation.

Self restraint is an important trait that is focused upon to ensure that children do not use their skills for the wrong reasons, but also to let them know how and when they should rely upon their training. Martial arts training can have a positive impact on all aspects of a child’s life. In addition to helping them maintain physical fitness, they are also exposed to new social settings and given the opportunity to make new friends with people from varying backgrounds.

A healthy and confident child generally exhibits more positive behavior in school and at home than an unfit child lacking in confidence. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. An increase in attentiveness can help a child to succeed in school and excel later in life.

The rewards from enrollment in a martial arts program can be immense and long lasting. The physical well being, mental health and confidence learned while studying martial arts will likely stay with a child long after their classes stop.

Richmond Traditional Martial Arts provides Hanover VA Martial Arts training that will not only strengthen the body but also enhance mental stamina and confidence. If you’re in Hanover or Richmond VA and are interested in karate or ju jitsu give us a call.

Becoming the Best Windsurfer You Can Be – A Book Review

May 29th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

How would you like to become the world’s best windsurfer? Well then, how would you like to be an extremely excellent windsurfer, so you could enjoy the thrill and exhilaration of the sport? If so, I’d like to recommend a very good book to you, one that has all the information you’ll ever need to know about windsurfing. The name of the book is;

“Windsurfing – Improving Techniques” by Ben Oakley, 1987.

Although this book was written well before the latest technology in windsurfing it is excellent, and most of the fundamentals are there. I would recommend every windsurfer read this book. The author, Ben is a windsurfing coach and he’s well known for his work and is often quoted in “Windsurfing Magazine USA”

The art of learning technique is much different than the diagrams and pictures, as you have to get a feel for it; you have to become one with the waves and the wind. The author explains the essence and the feeling, and tries to explain how the windsurfer must mold themselves to be part of and work with the forces of nature. He also explains that you cannot always learn gradually especially in this environment, sometimes on a challenging day you end up learning a lot, the hard way.

If you learn in flat water with strong winds for instance and then move to a choppy river with strong currents everything changes. If you are windsurfing in ocean waves it’s a huge difference. He has some very good advice in the book for instance you must trust your equipment and never blame it, think of it as an extension of your body.

Practice makes perfect, and if you’re going to be out there for hours on end you’re going to have to do some self coaching, but you better make it fun, because that’s what it’s all about. When you first start you need to buy a big board with a beginner sale and then eventually advanced to a wave sail.

The author warns to be careful buying used equipment but if you are serious about the sport and you plan on moving up right away perhaps, you should go for it because you aren’t going to own that board very long anyway. Please consider all this.
